AUTUMN VIVALDI – available until 11 Oct!

The cake entrepreneur who started out as a home baker is now throwing the city's biggest cake party

Ruusa-Mari “Mammu” Höyhtyä's idea was simply to bake a few cakes to earn some extra money while on maternity leave. But word of mouth spread, and Mammun Hyväkakku, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, now employs nearly 20 bakers. On Valentine's Day, Mammu plans to host a Cake Party in Oulu like nothing seen before. The event is part of the Oulu2026 cultural programme.

Between 400 and 500 guests are expected at the Tullisali event centre for the city’s biggest cake party. Two weeks before the event, half of the tickets had already been sold. Mammu came up with the idea for the event towards the end of the year. “We were thinking about how we could celebrate our milestone anniversary in style together with our customers. The city’s biggest cake party sounded like a crazy enough idea,” Mammu says.

The star of the event is a delicious and varied cake buffet. The cake party will see the launch of the Oulu2026 cake, designed by Mammu and inspired by Oulu’s nature and character and the flavours of the north. “I dare say the cake turned out worthy of this year of celebration: fresh, bold and balanced. Come and have a taste!” Mammu says.

Alongside the Oulu2026 cake, the cake buffet features Hyväkakku favourites such as Double Chocolate & Raspberry, as well as trendy new flavours such as Liquorice & Lemon. Sandwich cakes (voileipäkakku) and savoury pies add variety, and coffee, tea and lemonade are also served. Of course, you can eat and drink as much as you like.

Between bites, guests will hear how Mammu went from home baker to entrepreneur. “The story is guaranteed to be genuine. Combining motherhood, family life and running a business has had many different phases, and looking back on them always brings up emotions,” Mammu promises.

The rest of the programme is also worthy of the city’s biggest cake party. Pianist Niklas Klaavo will provide skilful background music. Magician Elias Kvist will perform on stage and go from table to table doing close-up magic.

When asked, Mammu admits that organising such a big event is nerve-racking, but that it comes with the territory. “We boldly try everything. Sometimes we’re a bit nervous, sometimes we laugh, and we often wonder whether we dare, but nothing new comes about without trying. And things rarely go as badly as you fear beforehand.”

It is no coincidence that the event falls on Valentine’s Day, which is celebrated as Friends’ Day in Finland. “For us, caring is at the heart of everything. Not just caring about our customers, but about each other. We want a cake to feel and taste like it was made with care,” says Mammu, encouraging everyone to come to the feast with a friend.
